LASER HAIR REMOVAL

HOW DOES LASER HAIR REMOVAL WORK?

Laser hair removal has has been used for many years now, and  Melbourne has always been at the forefront of this technology. The Alexandrite Laser System is one of many lasers used today to REDUCE and THIN hair. It is FAST and COST-EFFECTIVE. The Laser emits pulses of high-energy light, which pass through the skin and are absorbed by the pigment/dark color in the hair shaft and follicle. The Laser energy heats the follicle and damages the cells that produce hair. Laser hair removal is fast, safe and gives excellent results.

We provide a free test patch and consultation, and our hair removal lasers are constantly upgraded to provide our clients with the latest technology. Even though we have IPL technology, we have found (and studies confirm) that true medical-strength lasers provide superior results over IPL.

Hair grows in cycles and the actively growing follicles (anagen phase) are the largest and darkest and are affected most by laser. Not all follicles are damaged each time. Treatments are spread out to allow for resting hairs to grow. An initial course of treatment e.g. 3-5 sessions, is followed by top-up treatments if more reduction is desired. Patients can start treatment and then stop if they are not satisfied.

At some point, the hair will stop responding because it is too thin for the laser and the pigmented follicle is too small to absorb the laser energy. Patients are usually happy at this point, however finer hair will still be present. The number of treatments depends on hair and skin color, hormone changes, age of the body area done, family history and medications. Each person varies in response so we cannot predict the exact outcome in each person. The patient can cease treatment at any time without a problem.

After a treatment, stubble may remain on the skin, to minimize this, the hair needs to be AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE ON THE DAY OF TREATMENT. Any remaining stubble can be plucked, buffed clipped or (if it grows a little) waxed. Some hairs will fall out slowly - others will remain stunted and some will continue to grow at a slower rate. Re-growth can be patchy after the first few treatments but tends to even out with later treatments.

Traditional hair removal techniques such as shaving, waxing, plucking provide only short-term relief from unwanted hair and have their problems. Until now, the only other almost permanent way to remove hair was electrolysis, which can be painful, is very time-consuming and is limited to small areas.

The Alexandrite Laser safely removes unwanted hair without damaging the delicate pores of the skin by selectively targeting the follicles.

HOW LONG DO TREATMENTS TAKE?

The Alexandrite Laser can treat delicate facial areas, and also large areas such as chests, backs, legs etc.

For example, a full chest or back takes only 30-45 mins, Bikini Line 10-15 mins, Lower Legs 30 mins, and Upper Lip 5 mins.

No needles, minimal discomfort, no time wasting.

DOES IT HURT?

Patients feel a short warm sting - this passes quickly. Warmth (like mild sunburn) can be felt afterwards. The Alexandrite is gentle compared to other lasers. The Laser energy is adjusted to meet your personal needs and sensitivity.

A local anaesthetic cream is available, if required, for sensitive areas.

WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS?

The skin will be pink and feel like a mild sunburn for a few hours or less often a day or so, but can be easily covered with foundation if necessary. This is all most people experience and normal activities can be resumed. Occasionally, in darker skin types, small fine crusts can form in a few spots but these pass in a few days by themselves. Darkening or Lightening of the skin can occur and is usually mild and transient, typically resolving in several weeks to months but very rarely may be permanent

HOW DO I PREPARE?

On the day of treatment your hair should be as SHORT AS POSSIBLE, 2 MM LONG AT THE MOST. Use Clippers or Scissors. Avoid waxing, bleaching, plucking or sun-tanning 2 weeks before. Use a sunscreen on the area 2 weeks before treatment if sun exposed. The darker your skin, the more sensitive it will be. Bleaching cream can be used to lighten skin if required.

SURVEY RESULTS

A random survey of 67 of our patients in 1999 revealed the following results:

Average number of treatments 2.9

Percentage Reduction: No Change 3%
Thinner 7%
Moderate Reduction 41%
Significant Reduction 35%
Very Little Regrowth 14%
Percentage Side Effects: None 21%
Redness 48%
Minor Swelling 14%
Minor Crusting 12%
Blisters 2%
Pigment Change 3%

*** So 90% of people had reduction they were happy with and 70% of people had very few side effects, and
***
93% of people said they were happy with the treatment.

IS IT PERMANENT?

Regrowth is thinner and less dense after each treatment. More hair may develop with age and hormone changes. Laser provides long term hair growth suppression, providing excellent results in THINNING and REDUCING hair.

Grey/White/Blonde/Light Red hairs are NOT affected by treatment. Results vary depending on skin and hair color, age, hormones, medication and family history. The thicker the hair the better the results.

Laser provides the best way to keep unwanted hair away.
